Zelma Watson George becomes the first Black woman to perform a leading operatic role on Broadway.
In 1950, Zelma Watson George made history when she debuted on Broadway in the lead operatic role of Madame Flora in Gian Carlo Menotti's "The Medium". Invited by Menotti himself, this performance marked the first time a Black woman had sung a traditionally white lead role in an opera on Broadway. During an era marked by racial segregation, this achievement broke significant barriers and paved the way for future generations of African American performers.
