UN officially designates November 25 for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
On December 17, 1999, the United Nations General Assembly passed resolution 54/134, officially designating November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. This decision was a direct result of the concerted efforts to honor the legacy of the Mirabal sisters, who became symbols of the struggle against gender-based violence. The resolution not only commemorated their sacrifice but also catalyzed international movements advocating for gender equality and protection of women’s rights globally.
