The first cadre of Navy nurses, led by Esther Voorhees Hasson, is formed.
On the same day the Navy Nurse Corps was established, May 13, 1908, the initial cadre, known as the 'Sacred Twenty', was officially constituted. This group was led by Superintendent Esther Voorhees Hasson, along with two chief nurses, Martha Pringle and Victoria White, and seventeen other skilled nurses. Their formation represented the first formal inclusion of women in the U.S. Navy’s ranks, setting objectives and standards that would guide the Corps’ development. This was a remarkable achievement in the history of gender roles within military institutions.
