In 1883, Rebecca Lee Crumpler published A Book of Medical Discourses in Two Parts, one of the earliest known medical publications by an African American. This work, which addresses health issues concerning women and children, is often cited as the first medical textbook authored by a Black physician. It provided critical insights into and advice on preventive healthcare and common ailments for mothers and children. Publishing this book was a remarkable accomplishment given the barriers she faced as an African American woman in the late 19th century.
