First female astronomy professor in the U.S.

In 1865, Maria Mitchell became the first professor of astronomy at Vassar College, a newly established institution dedicated to the higher education of women. Taking on the role of professor and director of the Vassar College Observatory, she became the first female astronomy professor in the United States. Her appointment was pioneering, as she not only led the astronomical department but also served as a mentor and beacon for young women pursuing scientific studies.
