In 1998, COPINH, with Berta Cáceres in a leading role, organized the removal of a Christopher Columbus statue outside the National Congress in Tegucigalpa. The replacement with a statue of Lempira was a powerful act of reclaiming indigenous history and pride, challenging colonial narratives.
