On November 25, 1960, Patria, Minerva, and María Teresa Mirabal were assassinated by agents of the dictator Rafael Trujillo. The sisters were returning from visiting their imprisoned husbands when they were intercepted and brutally murdered. The event was intended to resemble an automobile accident, but it quickly became clear it was a political assassination aimed at silencing their revolutionary activities.
