On July 1, 2022, public health physician and humanitarian Helene D. Gayle began serving as the 11th president of Spelman College.[2] Gayle, formerly CEO of the Chicago Community Trust and president and CEO of CARE USA, brought decades of experience in global health, philanthropy, and social impact.
Her appointment signaled Spelman’s commitment to combining liberal arts education with attention to public health, economic equity, and global development. As president, Gayle has focused on student success, strengthening STEM and social science programs, and deepening partnerships that prepare women of African descent for leadership in a rapidly changing world.[2][5]
