Sor Juana completes her 'Respuesta a Sor Filotea', defending women's intellectual freedom.
On March 1, 1691, Sor Juana completed her formidable letter, the Respuesta a Sor Filotea de la Cruz. This work stands as a cornerstone of feminist literature, in which Sor Juana articulated a defense of a woman's right to intellectual pursuit and scholarship. The piece was written in response to the Bishop of Puebla, who had published her critique of a sermon without her consent. In it, she cleverly addressed the hypocrisy of denying women the same educational opportunities as men. Emerging as the first published feminist voice in the Americas, Sor Juana's text articulated the intellectual disparity of her era, becoming a symbol of resistance to female subordination.
