Madam C. J. Walker founded her own manufacturing company in Pittsburgh.
On August 5, 1908, Madam C. J. Walker established the Madam C. J. Walker Manufacturing Company in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This formalized the business venture she had been developing for years, transforming it into one of the largest Black-owned enterprises in the United States. With the creation of this company, Walker provided Black women with opportunities for economic independence, training them as ‘beauty culturists’ who promoted her products door to door. The company's remarkable growth was a testament to Walker's innovative spirit and business acumen, as well as her commitment to uplifting the Black community.
