Nadia Murad receives Germany’s Bambi Award, honoring her advocacy for Yazidi survivors and against sexual violence in war.
On 21 November 2019, Nadia Murad received the German Bambi Award (Medienpreis), one of Germany’s most prominent media and cultural honors. She was recognized in the "Our Earth" or comparable category for her advocacy on behalf of Yazidi survivors and her efforts to draw global attention to the genocide and to sexual violence in war.
The Bambi Award, broadcast widely on German television, introduced Murad’s story to mass audiences beyond traditional human‑rights circles. It highlighted her dual identity as both victim and advocate: someone who had survived unimaginable violence and then used media platforms to demand justice and reconstruction for her community.
This recognition was historically important because it revealed how mainstream European culture increasingly embraces narratives of survivor leadership and minority rights. By celebrating Murad at a glamorous media event, organizers signaled that confronting genocide and sexual violence is not only a matter for diplomats and courts but also a central moral concern for popular culture.
For women’s history, the award illustrates the broadening of public space in which women who speak about sexual violence are honored rather than stigmatized, reinforcing shifts in societal attitudes toward survivors and their role in public life.
