On August 29, 2023, North Carolina Central University announced that Jennifer King had joined its football staff as an offensive analyst. The appointment made her the program’s first female football coach and, at the time, the only Black female analyst at a Division I HBCU.
This move mattered historically because it brought King’s barrier-breaking career into the HBCU coaching landscape, where representation carries both symbolic and institutional significance. HBCUs have long served as crucial sites of Black educational and athletic leadership, so King’s hiring added a new layer of visibility for Black women in college football staffing.
The appointment also showed that her influence was not confined to the NFL. By taking a role focused on the offensive side of the ball at NCCU, she extended her coaching path into player development at the collegiate level while becoming a model for women seeking entry into football analysis and coaching.
