Birth of Janaki Ammal

Edavaleth Kakkat Janaki Ammal was born on November 4, 1897, in Tellicherry, Kerala. She was born into a family that valued education, which played a crucial role in shaping her future career in science, especially at a time when women in India had limited opportunities in formal education. Her early exposure to intellectual pursuits and the encouragement from her family laid the foundation for her illustrious career as a botanist, eventually leading her to become one of the first Indian women to earn a D.Sc. in botany.
