Dorothea Lange was born on May 26, 1895, in Hoboken, New Jersey. Originally named Dorothea Margaretta Nutzhorn, she later dropped her father's surname following his departure from the family. This early life challenge helped shape her empathetic photographic eye, as did a bout with polio that left her with a lifelong limp, and inspired much of her work focusing on overlooked members of society.
