Awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences

On October 9, 2023, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced that Claudia Goldin had been awarded the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel—commonly known as the Nobel Prize in Economics—"for having advanced our understanding of women's labour market outcomes."

The Nobel committee highlighted Goldin's decades of meticulous research using historical U.S. data spanning more than 200 years, through which she uncovered the key drivers behind gender gaps in employment and earnings. Her work explained why women's labor force participation followed a U-shaped curve through economic development rather than a simple linear trend, and she identified critical factors—including the introduction of the birth control pill, changing social norms, and the structure of jobs—that shaped the persistent gender pay gap.

The announcement, made from Stockholm, immediately elevated Goldin to global prominence as a leading voice on gender economics.
