The autonomy framework encompassed multiple dimensions: bodily autonomy (including reproductive rights and freedom from violence), economic autonomy (equal pay and property rights), legal autonomy (equal citizenship and protection under law), and social autonomy (freedom from imposed marriage, dress codes, and mobility restrictions).
This year's march was particularly notable for further normalizing public discussion of sexuality, consent, and sexual health — topics that remained highly taboo in mainstream Pakistani discourse. Signs and speeches openly addressed marital rape, LGBTQ+ rights, and menstrual health, provoking significant conservative backlash, including inflammatory media coverage and some physical confrontations with counter-protesters.
Despite facing an organized smear campaign that falsely attributed blasphemous content to march organizers, the 2020 Aurat March proceeded in multiple cities and is remembered as a milestone in pushing the boundaries of acceptable public feminist discourse in Pakistan, deepening the ideological and thematic sophistication of the movement beyond its founding demands.
