Ana Maria de Jesus Ribeiro, later known to history as Anita Garibaldi, was born on August 30, 1821, in the small fishing town of Laguna, in the province of Santa Catarina, Brazil. She was the daughter of Bento Ribeiro da Silva, a cattle-driver of Azorean descent, and Maria Antônia de Jesus Antunes.
Her birth in a modest, rural coastal community in southern Brazil gave little indication of the extraordinary life that awaited her. Raised in a frontier culture shaped by cattle ranching, seafaring, and the political turbulence of a newly independent Brazil, Anita developed the horsemanship, resilience, and independence that would later define her as a revolutionary fighter.
Her early environment, marked by regional uprisings and the volatile politics of the Empire of Brazil, foreshadowed the revolutionary path she would take after meeting Giuseppe Garibaldi in 1839. Laguna itself would later become a flashpoint of the Ragamuffin War (Guerra dos Farrapos), the conflict in which Anita first appeared alongside Garibaldi as a combatant, gunner, and strategist, forever linking her birthplace to her legend as one of the few women of her era to fight directly in battle alongside her husband.
