Martha Dandridge, later known as Martha Washington, was born on June 2, 1731, in Virginia.
Martha Dandridge was born at Chestnut Grove plantation in New Kent County, Virginia. Her family was well-connected within the Virginian gentry, which afforded her a social and educational upbringing suited to managing a large household. This foundation would later prove vital in her influential roles as wife to notable figures Daniel Parke Custis and George Washington and eventually as America's first First Lady.
