Filed U.S. patent application for biodegradable foamed plastic materials

On August 8, 1995, Catia Bastioli, working with Novamont S.p.A., filed the U.S. patent application for "Biodegradable foamed plastic materials" (application US08/512,673). This filing represented a critical step in the development of starch-based bioplastics capable of replacing conventional petroleum-derived foamed plastics in packaging and single-use applications.

The application built on Bastioli's pioneering earlier work on starch-based polymer compositions and extended the technology to foamed materials, which posed unique technical challenges around cell structure, biodegradability, and mechanical performance. At a time when the plastics industry was overwhelmingly petroleum-based and environmental awareness of plastic pollution was only beginning to gain traction, this filing was part of a broader portfolio of innovations that would ultimately underpin the commercial Mater-Bi bioplastic line.
