Following their arrest, on August 8, 1944, Anne Frank, her family, and the other annex members were relocated to Westerbork transit camp in the northeastern Netherlands. Westerbork was the initial step in the nightmarish journey deeper into the heart of Nazi cruelty, leading ultimately to Auschwitz. Here, Anne experienced the dehumanization characteristic of Nazi detention, which further fueled the posthumous urgency of her diary to convey the universal cry against oppression and inhumanity.
