Amelia Mary Earhart was born on July 24, 1897, in Atchison, Kansas, at the home of her maternal grandfather, Alfred Otis, a former judge. She was the first child of Samuel 'Edwin' Earhart and Amy Otis Earhart.

Her early childhood was spent partly in the relatively genteel, conservative household of her grandparents in Atchison and partly following her father's career as a railroad attorney across the Midwest.
