
Aloha Wanderwell was born as Idris Galcia Hall on October 13, 1906, in Winnipeg, Canada. Her early life was largely spent traveling with her mother across various parts of Asia after her father’s death during World War I. These formative years instilled in her a love for travel and adventure.
At the young age of 16, Aloha joined a U.S. Army cadet corps, which laid the foundation for her adventurous spirit. In 1922, she answered an advertisement seeking a young woman to join a world-travel team led by Walter Wanderwell, a Polish filmmaker and explorer. Aloha adopted the surname Wanderwell and set off on a journey that would last several years, becoming the first woman to drive around the world, traversing through 43 countries and covering over 380,000 miles by car.
During her travels, Aloha documented her experiences through films and writings. She directed, produced, and starred in “Car and Camera Around the World” and “With Car and Camera Around the World,” showcasing diverse cultures, landscapes, and various global issues. She became a celebrated figure in media, known for her adventurous spirit and as a pioneering female traveler.
Aloha's contributions to exploration and filmmaking gained her international recognition. She was often hailed as "The World’s Most Widely Traveled Girl." Her films won several accolades from global film festivals during the 1920s and 1930s.
In 1925, Aloha married Walter Wanderwell. The couple had two children. However, in 1932, Walter was mysteriously murdered aboard their yacht in Long Beach, California. Aloha continued her explorations and filmmaking following his death.
Aloha Wanderwell remains an iconic figure in the history of exploration and filmmaking. She broke gender barriers in a predominantly male-led domain, inspiring future generations of women in exploration and aviation. Her films provide valuable visual insights into the interwar period’s global cultures.
In her later years, Aloha focused on curating her extensive film archives and occasionally lectured on her travels. She passed away on June 4, 1996, in California, leaving behind a legacy defined by adventure and innovation.
