Patti Smith was born on December 30, 1946, in Chicago, Illinois. She was the oldest of four children. Her dad worked in a factory. Her mom used to sing jazz music. When Patti was little, her family moved to New Jersey. She grew up there.
Patti's family did not have much money. But her house was full of big ideas. She learned about the Bible. She also fell in love with poems and rock music. She liked writers like William Blake. She liked singers like Bob Dylan.
Patti went to college for a little while, but she left early. She worked in a factory. This hard job later became the subject of one of her songs, called "Piss Factory."
In 1967, when Patti was 20, she moved to New York City. She wanted to be an artist. She worked in a bookstore and got involved in theater. There, she met a photographer named Robert Mapplethorpe. They became very close friends. They helped each other become better artists. Years later, Patti wrote a famous book about their friendship called Just Kids.
Patti started reading her poems out loud with electric guitar music behind her. This new style mixed poetry and rock. In 1973, she published her first book of poems, called Seventh Heaven.
In 1974, Patti formed a band called the Patti Smith Group. They played a song called "Hey Joe." Soon, Patti and her band became famous in New York's punk rock scene. They played at a club called CBGB.
In 1975, Patti released her first album, Horses. It had a famous song called "Gloria." The album's cover photo, taken by Robert Mapplethorpe, became one of the most famous pictures in rock history. People started calling Patti the "Godmother of Punk."
In 1977, Patti fell off a stage during a concert. She hurt her back badly. She had to rest for a while.
In 1978, Patti released an album called Easter. It had a big hit song called "Because the Night," which she wrote with singer Bruce Springsteen. The song became very popular on the radio.
Patti released another album called Wave in 1979. After that, she left the music business for a while. She moved to Detroit and married a musician named Fred "Sonic" Smith. They had two children, named Jackson and Jesse. Patti focused on her family during the 1980s.
In 1988, Patti came back to music with an album called Dream of Life. It had a famous song called "People Have the Power." This song became an anthem, meaning people sang it at rallies to support important causes.
Sadly, Patti lost many people she loved. Robert Mapplethorpe died in 1989. Her husband Fred died in 1994. These losses made Patti very sad, but they also inspired her music.
In 1996, Patti released an album called Gone Again. It talked about loss and healing. She kept making music into the 2000s, writing about big topics like war and peace.
Patti also became a great writer. In 2010, she published a memoir called Just Kids, about her friendship with Robert Mapplethorpe. This book won a big prize called the National Book Award. In 2015, she wrote another book called M Train.
Over the years, Patti won many awards. France gave her special honors for her art. In 2007, she joined the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. In 2011, she won the Polar Music Prize. In 2014, she even sang for the Pope in Rome!
