Marija Jurić Zagorka was born on March 2, 1873. She was born in a small village called Negovec, near Ivanić-Grad, Croatia. Long ago, this place was part of a big empire called Austro-Hungary. Marija was the oldest of six children. Her family did not have much money. Her father managed a large farm called an estate. Her mother took care of the home. Both parents thought school was important. But back then, girls did not always get to go to school like boys did. Even so, Marija loved to learn. She read many books. She was very curious about history and politics.
When Marija grew up, she moved to a place called Zagorje. Later, she moved to the city of Zagreb. There, she became the first female journalist in Croatia. A journalist is someone who writes news stories. This was a big deal! Almost all journalists at that time were men. Many people did not think a woman could do this job. Some people were unfair to her because she was a girl. To protect herself, she used a pen name. A pen name is a made-up name a writer uses instead of their real name. Her pen name was "Zagorka." She worked hard and did not give up. Soon, she got a job at a newspaper called Obzor. She became famous for writing about politics and problems in society.
Zagorka is most famous for her exciting stories, called serialized novels. A serialized novel comes out in parts, like chapters, over time. People loved her stories! Her books were full of brave women, funny moments, adventure, and important messages about life. One of her best-known stories is called "The Witch of Gric." This story mixed real history with make-believe. It also had messages about Croatia's past and its people. Zagorka did not write like other authors of her time. She liked to try new things instead of following old rules. She also cared deeply about women's rights. She started a magazine just for women called Ženski List. She also helped organize a group that worked for women's rights in Croatia.
People still remember Zagorka today. She is seen as an important part of Croatian culture. Many people still read her books. Sadly, during her lifetime, many people did not fully appreciate how talented she was. This was often because she was a woman.
Zagorka was married one time. Her husband worked for the railway in Hungary. He had old-fashioned ideas that did not match Zagorka's modern ones. Because of this, the marriage did not last long. After they divorced, Zagorka went back to Zagreb. She spent her time writing and working for women's rights.
Zagorka's work made a big difference. She was one of the first women to become a journalist in Croatia. Because of her, more women were able to become writers and journalists too. Every year, Croatia celebrates her life with special events. Many students and teachers still study her work today.
Even when Zagorka got older, she kept writing. She had money problems and health problems too. But she never stopped working. She passed away on November 29, 1957, in Zagreb. Zagorka was strong and never gave up. She left behind a lasting impact on Croatian culture and on people who fight for change.
