Jennifer King was born on August 6, 1984, in Eden, North Carolina. She grew up loving sports. Her path to becoming a football coach took many steps, and she worked hard along the way.
King went to college at Guilford College. She played two sports there: basketball and softball. She was very good at both. She did not start out playing football. Instead, she built her skills in many sports first.
After college, King became a coach. She started by coaching women's college basketball. Later, she moved into football coaching. This was a big change, and it became a special part of her story.
Before she became a coach, King played football herself for more than ten years. She played for teams like the Carolina Phoenix, the New York Sharks, and the D.C. Divas. These teams were part of women's football leagues. She played different positions, like quarterback, receiver, and safety. Playing so many positions helped her understand the game very well.
King also coached basketball at two colleges: Johnson & Wales University and Greensboro College. At Johnson & Wales, her team won a big championship in 2018. This showed she was already a great coach before she ever coached in the NFL.
In 2018, King got her first big football coaching job. She became an intern with the Carolina Panthers. Their head coach was Ron Rivera. She also coached with a team called the Arizona Hotshots. In 2019, she worked with Dartmouth College as a coach, too.
In 2020, King joined the Washington football team as a coaching intern. She worked with the running backs. This gave her a chance to learn how NFL teams practice and plan for games.
Then, on January 26, 2021, something amazing happened. Washington made King a full-time assistant coach for the running backs. She became the first Black woman to have a full-time assistant coaching job in the NFL. This was a very big deal. It showed that women, and especially Black women, could be NFL coaches too.
King coached in some very special games. On December 27, 2020, she led the running backs during a game because other coaches were missing. On January 9, 2021, she coached in a playoff game. It was the first playoff game ever where both teams had women coaches. On September 13, 2020, she was part of another historic game. It had a woman referee and a woman assistant coach on each side.
On February 3, 2022, King coached in the East–West Shrine Bowl. This is a big college football event. She was the first woman ever to coach in this game.
In 2023, King took a new job. She joined North Carolina Central University as a football coach. She was the first woman to coach football there. She was also the only Black woman working as a football analyst at a Division I HBCU at that time.
People do not know much about King's personal life, like if she has a husband or children. She has kept her private life private. What people do know is that she has spent her life playing and coaching sports.
Jennifer King's story matters because she broke many barriers. She showed that women, and especially Black women, belong in football coaching. Her hard work opened doors for others who want to follow the same path.
