Gloria Steinem was born on March 25, 1934, in Toledo, Ohio. Her dad bought and sold old things, so her family moved around a lot in a house trailer. This meant Gloria went to many different schools. When Gloria was a teenager, her parents got divorced. She lived with her mom, who was very sad and sick for a long time. Gloria took care of her. This taught her how hard life can be for women who do not get help.
Gloria went to college at Smith College, where she studied government. She even spent a year in India learning about peaceful protests. This trip taught her a lot about helping people who do not have much power. After college, she moved to New York City to become a writer.
At first, Gloria had a hard time getting serious writing jobs because she was a woman. She wrote for magazines and even went undercover as a "Playboy Bunny" to show how badly women workers were treated there. Her story about this made her famous. Later, she wrote a very important essay comparing women's fight for fair treatment to the fight for Black civil rights.
Gloria became one of the most famous leaders of the women's rights movement. She helped start Ms. magazine in 1972. It was the first big magazine made entirely by women, for women. It talked about topics like fair pay, safety, and women's rights. Gloria also helped start groups like the National Women's Political Caucus, which helps women run for government jobs, and the Ms. Foundation for Women, which gives money to help women and girls.
Gloria wrote many books, like Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions and Revolution from Within. She traveled around the country asking people to support the Equal Rights Amendment, a law that would make sure women and men are treated equally. She also worked hard for women's rights to make choices about their own bodies and health.
In 1993, Gloria helped start "Take Our Daughters to Work Day." This let girls go to work with their parents to see what different jobs were like. Later, boys joined too. Gloria also helped start groups that fight unfair treatment of women around the world.
Gloria has won many awards for her work. In 2013, President Obama gave her the Presidential Medal of Freedom, one of the highest awards a person can get in the United States. A play about her life, called Gloria: A Life, has also been performed in many places, including the Library of Congress.
For a long time, Gloria did not want to get married. She thought marriage was unfair to women. But in 2000, when she was 66, she married a man named David Bale. Sadly, he passed away from cancer just three years later. In 1986, Gloria also had surgery for breast cancer. She got better and kept working hard.
In 2015, Gloria wrote a book called My Life on the Road about all her years of traveling and helping others. She still speaks up today about fairness for women, people of different races, and other groups.
Gloria Steinem is remembered as one of the most important leaders in the fight for women's rights. She helped change how people think about fairness between men and women, and she built many groups that still help people today.
