Flora Stevenson

Flora Stevenson was born on October 30, 1839, in Glasgow, Scotland. Her family was very smart and cared a lot about making things better for people. Flora’s mom and dad talked a lot about how important education was. Flora listened and learned from them. She grew up wanting to help people, too.

When Flora was older, she started working to help children, especially the ones who did not have a lot of money. She thought it was very important that all children went to school and learned. At that time, not everyone got to go to school, and many girls were left out of school. Flora did not think that was fair. She wanted every boy and girl to have a chance to learn.

In 1873, Flora did something very special. She became the first woman to be chosen for the Edinburgh School Board. That was a big deal because not many women had jobs like that back then. Flora worked hard to make schools better. She wanted school to be free for everyone, so more kids could go. She also wanted girls to have the same chance to learn as boys. Because of her, many schools changed their rules and let all kids come to learn.

People were very happy with the work Flora did. Even after she passed away on September 28, 1905, people remembered her and still talk about how much she helped. There are some schools in Scotland named after Flora. This is to honor her and all the good things she did for education. People look up to her as a hero who helped change schools for the better.

Flora Stevenson spent a lot of time working, but she loved being with her family, too. She didn’t talk much about her personal life, but everybody knew she was close to her family.

Flora worked all her life to make schools fair for everyone. Because of her, more children got to go to school and get an education. She showed that one person can make a big change in the world.
