Condoleezza Rice was born on November 14, 1954, in Birmingham, Alabama. Back then, Birmingham was a very unfair place for Black people. Rice was the only child of her parents. Her dad was a minister and teacher. Her mom taught music and science. Her name comes from an Italian music word that means "with sweetness."

Rice grew up in a family that cared a lot about school, hard work, and faith. Her parents tried to protect her from unfair treatment. She learned to play piano and was very good at it. For a while, she dreamed of playing piano in concerts. But things around her were hard too. There was danger and unfair treatment for Black people in her city. This later shaped how she thought about safety and government.

Rice was super smart. She went to college at the University of Denver when she was only 15 years old! At first she loved piano, but then she took a class about world politics. She got very interested in a country called the Soviet Union. She decided to study that instead of music.

Rice finished college in 1974. Then she got a master's degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1975. She even went to Russia to study the Russian language! In 1981, she earned her Ph.D., which is the highest college degree you can get. She became an expert on the Soviet Union, which was unusual for a woman and for an African American person at that time.

Rice began teaching at Stanford University in 1981. She was a wonderful teacher and researcher. She also started helping the government. In 1989, she worked with President George H.W. Bush on important decisions about the Soviet Union.

In 1993, Rice became provost of Stanford University. That means she was in charge of the school's money and classes. She was the first woman and the first African American to have that job there. She fixed the school's money problems.

In 2001, Rice made history again. She became the National Security Advisor for President George W. Bush. She was the first woman ever to have this important job. This job means helping keep the country safe. While she had this job, terrorists attacked the United States on September 11, 2001. Rice helped the government respond. She also supported the decision to go to war in Iraq, which some people agreed with and others did not.

In 2005, Rice became Secretary of State. This is one of the most important jobs in the government. It means representing America to other countries. She was the first African American woman to have this job. She worked hard on peace in the Middle East and talked with other countries about nuclear weapons. In 2008, she became the first Secretary of State to visit Libya in over 50 years.

Rice left her government job in 2009. She went back to Stanford University. She started teaching again and joined a research group called the Hoover Institution. In 2020, she became the leader of that whole institution.

Rice never got married and has no children. She still loves playing piano. She once played music with a famous cellist named Yo-Yo Ma. She also loves football and golf. In 2012, she became one of the first women allowed to join a famous golf club called Augusta National.

Today, Rice is remembered as a trailblazer. She broke barriers for women and African Americans in government and in schools. She helped make history, even though some of her decisions are still debated by people today.
