Betty Boothroyd was born on October 8, 1929, in Dewsbury, England. Dewsbury was a town with many textile mills. Her parents worked in the mills and cared a lot about workers' rights. Betty grew up watching her family fight for fair treatment. This made her interested in helping people.
Betty went to local schools. Then she studied at a college for business skills. She learned typing and office work. These skills would help her later in life.
When Betty was young, she danced with a famous dance group called The Tiller Girls. Dancing taught her how to be brave in front of crowds. But soon, she decided she wanted to work in politics instead.
Betty moved to London. She worked as a secretary for important political leaders. She tried to become a Member of Parliament, or MP, several times. An MP is someone who is elected to help make laws for the country. She lost her first few tries. This was hard, but she did not give up.
Betty even went to the United States to work with an American lawmaker. She learned how government worked in another country. Later, she came back to England and joined a local city council.
In 1973, Betty finally won an election. She became the MP for a place called West Bromwich. She kept this job for almost 30 years! At the same time, she also worked as a European lawmaker for a few years.
Betty worked hard in Parliament. People noticed she was fair and smart. In 1987, she became Deputy Speaker. The Speaker is the person who runs the meetings in Parliament and makes sure everyone follows the rules.
Then in 1992, something amazing happened. Betty was chosen to be the Speaker of the House of Commons. She was the very first woman to ever have this job in over 700 years! This was a huge moment in history.
As Speaker, Betty was strict but kind. She made sure MPs behaved and spoke clearly. She decided not to wear the old-fashioned wig that Speakers usually wore, but she still wore the special robe. People loved watching her on TV. She became famous all over the country.
Betty was Speaker for eight years, until 2000. Then she retired. In 2001, she got a special title: Baroness Boothroyd. This let her join the House of Lords, another part of the government, where she kept helping make good decisions.
Betty wrote a book about her life story, from her childhood in Yorkshire to becoming Speaker. She often gave talks at schools and universities. She wanted more young people, especially girls, to get involved in politics.
Betty never married and did not have children. She said this helped her focus completely on her important work. She stayed close to her Yorkshire roots her whole life.
Sadly, Betty passed away on February 26, 2023. She was 93 years old. People across the country remembered her as brave, funny, and fair. Her funeral was held near her hometown in Yorkshire.
Betty Boothroyd will always be remembered as a trailblazer. She showed that a woman from a small mill town could rise to one of the most important jobs in the country.
