Benjamin Oliver Davis Sr. was born in Washington, D.C. Most records say his birthday was July 1, 1877. His parents were the children of enslaved people. His father worked for the government. His mother was a nurse.
Davis went to a special school for Black students called M Street High School. Later, he studied for a short time at Howard University. Back then, life was hard for Black people in America. Laws and unfair rules kept them from many jobs and chances.
In 1898, Davis joined the Army to help fight in the Spanish-American War. He was smart and worked hard, so he moved up quickly. In 1901, he became an officer called a second lieutenant. This was very rare for a Black man at that time.
For many years, Davis served in the Army. The Army kept Black soldiers separate from white soldiers. This is called segregation. Even though Davis was very good at his job, he was often passed over for promotions because of his race. He taught at Black colleges, worked as a military helper in other countries, and gave advice about how Black soldiers were treated.
Then, in 1940, something amazing happened. Davis became a brigadier general. This made him the first Black general in the United States military! President Franklin D. Roosevelt approved this big step. It was very important because it showed Black people could lead at the highest levels.
During World War II, General Davis visited army camps. He checked on how Black soldiers were being treated. He found many problems, like bad living conditions and unfair rules. He worked hard to make things better and to get Black soldiers into real fighting roles, not just support jobs.
Davis retired from the Army in 1941, but the very next day, he was called back to help during the war! He kept working until he fully retired in 1948. By then, the government had made a new rule that said the military must treat all soldiers equally, no matter their race.
Davis earned many awards for his service. He received medals like the Bronze Star and the Distinguished Service Medal. He also got awards from other countries. A college called Atlanta University gave him an honorary degree too.
Davis married a woman named Elnora Dickerson. They had children together, including a son named Benjamin O. Davis Jr. His son grew up to become a famous general in the Air Force too! He led a group of brave pilots called the Tuskegee Airmen. Davis Sr. taught his son to work hard and never give up, and that lesson helped his son succeed.
Benjamin O. Davis Sr. is remembered as a hero who broke barriers. He showed that Black leaders could rise to the top, even when the rules were unfair. His hard work helped make the military fairer for everyone who came after him.
Davis died on November 26, 1970. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery, a special place for American heroes. His story reminds us that one person's courage can change history for many people.
