Amrita Pritam was born on August 31, 1919. She was born in a town called Gujranwala. This town was in Punjab, and it is now part of Pakistan. Amrita was the only child in her family. Her father was a schoolteacher and a preacher. Her mother was a poet. Because of her mother, Amrita loved words and stories from a young age.
Amrita's mother died in 1930. Amrita was very sad. But this sadness helped her become a strong poet. Back then, many people thought girls should not write or have big careers. Amrita did not let this stop her. She kept writing anyway.

Amrita wrote for over 50 years. In 1947, something very sad and important happened in India. It was called the Partition. This event split India into two countries. Many people were hurt and had to leave their homes. Amrita wrote a powerful poem about this called "Ajj Aakhaan Waris Shah Nu." She also wrote a famous novel called Pinjar. This book told the story of how the Partition hurt people's lives. Later, Pinjar was made into a popular movie in India. Amrita's writing often talked about love, pain, and what it was like to be a woman during hard times.
Amrita won many awards for her writing. In 1956, she won the Sahitya Akademi Award. In 1969, she won the Padma Shri. In 1982, she won the Jnanpith Award. This is India's biggest award for writers. In 2004, she won the Padma Vibhushan. This is one of India's highest honors for any citizen.
Amrita's personal life was full of feelings and change. She married a man named Pritam Singh when she was young. Later, they separated. Amrita also had a very close friendship with a songwriter named Sahir Ludhianvi. This friendship inspired some of her most emotional poems. Later in her life, Amrita found happiness with an artist named Imroz. He stayed by her side for the rest of her life.
Amrita is remembered as a very important writer. She was the first famous female writer in the Punjabi language. She broke old rules that said women could not be bold writers. Her books gave a voice to women everywhere. She wrote honestly about women's rights and their feelings. Because of this, she inspired many writers and helpers of women's rights around the world.
When Amrita grew older, she kept writing. She lived with Imroz in a city called New Delhi. Even when she got sick, she stayed active. She loved talking with people who read her books. Amrita Pritam died on October 31, 2005. She left behind a huge gift to the world: her amazing stories and poems.
