3. What job did Alva Myrdal have from 1955 to 1961?

Alva Myrdal was born on January 31, 1902, in a town called Uppsala, Sweden. She was the oldest of five children. Her father built buildings and cared a lot about helping his town. Alva grew up caring about people too. She went to school in Stockholm and later went to college there. This was unusual, because not many women went to college back then. She studied how people learn and how people act.
Alva also studied for a short time in England and the United States. She learned new ideas about teaching and helping people. She believed that scientists could help governments make good choices for everyone.
In 1924, Alva married a man named Gunnar Myrdal. He was very smart about money and how countries use it. Gunnar later won a big prize called the Nobel Prize. Alva and Gunnar worked together a lot. They traveled and studied how people lived in different countries.
In 1934, Alva and Gunnar wrote a famous book together. It was about how Sweden could help families instead of just telling people to have more babies. They said the government should help pay for homes, doctors, and childcare. This book helped Sweden build its caring government system, where the country helps take care of its people. Alva said women should not have to choose between having a job and having a family. She thought they could do both if the government helped.
From 1936 to 1948, Alva ran a school in Stockholm that trained teachers for young children. She also joined a political group called the Social Democratic Party.
Alva became famous for being a smart leader. In 1949, she became the head of a science group at a big organization called UNESCO in Paris. She was the first woman to have that important job. Later, from 1950 to 1955, she led a part of the United Nations that worked on helping people around the world.
From 1955 to 1961, Alva worked as Sweden's ambassador, which means she represented her country, in India, Burma, Ceylon, and Nepal. She was one of the first women in the whole world to have such an important job talking for her country. In India, she learned more about poor countries and about stopping wars.
Later, Alva worked hard to stop countries from making more nuclear weapons, which are extremely powerful and dangerous bombs. In 1962, she became Sweden's main speaker at big meetings in Geneva about getting rid of weapons. She wanted countries to stop testing bombs and to have fewer weapons. She often disagreed with leaders from the United States and Soviet Union.
In 1966, Alva joined Sweden's government as a special minister who worked on stopping weapons. She kept this job until 1973. She wrote and talked a lot about why countries should not depend on scary weapons to feel safe.
In 1976, Alva wrote a book that criticized the United States and Soviet Union. She said both countries talked about peace but really just wanted to stay powerful.
In 1982, Alva won the Nobel Peace Prize together with a man named Alfonso García Robles. They won it for their work trying to stop nuclear weapons. Alva is still the only woman from Sweden to win a Nobel Peace Prize.
Alva and Gunnar had three children: Jan, Sissela, and Kaj. The family was full of ideas, but it was hard too. Alva and Gunnar were often busy or away, so they didn't spend a lot of time with their kids. This made things hard between Alva and her children later on.
Alva Myrdal helped change how Sweden takes care of its people. She helped open doors for women to have big jobs in other countries. She worked hard to make the world safer from dangerous weapons. She died on February 1, 1986, in Stockholm. People still remember her as one of the most important women of her time.
