Her mother, Shanmukhavadivu, was a veena player and singer, and her father, Subramania Iyer, was a lawyer. Growing up in a music-oriented environment, Subbulakshmi was immersed in the arts from a young age. She received primary education at home and was taught music under the guidance of her mother and later trained under Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, a renowned Carnatic musician.

Subbulakshmi made her debut public performance at the age of ten at the prestigious Madras Music Academy, a remarkable feat that heralded the beginning of a legendary career.
