The couple moved to South Africa in 1893, where Mahatma Gandhi practiced law. Kasturba's involvement in her husband's efforts to fight discrimination against Indians marked the beginning of her public life. She participated in Gandhi's campaigns and endured imprisonment for the cause.
Returning to India in 1915, Kasturba continued to engage actively in India's struggle for independence. She was a pillar of support for Mahatma Gandhi, assisting in the establishment of Ashrams and advocating for local enterprises in line with the Swadeshi movement. Kasturba played a significant role in mobilizing women, encouraging them to join the struggle for independence and work towards social reforms.
Kasturba's advocacy extended to health and sanitation, emphasizing women's health in rural areas. Her role as a leader in the Quit India Movement in 1942 further solidified her position as a formidable figure in the fight against British rule. Despite facing multiple imprisonments, her tenacity inspired many.
Kasturba's unwavering support for non-violence and equality resonated with women across India, making her a seminal figure in the women's rights movement of the time. Her influence extended to many social movements that advocated for the upliftment of women and marginalized communities.
Kasturba's life was marked by personal sacrifices and relentless dedication to the independence movement. She suffered from chronic bronchitis exacerbated by the harsh conditions of imprisonment. She passed away on February 22, 1944, while under house arrest in Aga Khan Palace, Pune, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and leadership.
