Alice Guy-Blaché, born on July 1, 1873, in Saint-Mandé, France, was the youngest child of Emile Guy and Marie Clotilde-Félicie Guy. Her father owned a chain of bookstores, and much of her childhood was spent in both Switzerland and Chile. As a young woman, she attended school in Paris, where she received a standard education before entering the business world.

Alice began her career as a secretary at the Gaumont Film Company in 1894. Under the guidance of Léon Gaumont, she quickly rose through the ranks and became head of production. It was during this period that she made her first film, La Fée aux Choux (The Cabbage Fairy), in 1896, recognized as one of the first narrative films ever created.

After retiring from films in 1922, Alice returned to France briefly before settling in Mahwah, New Jersey. She lived a quiet life until passing away on March 24, 1968, leaving behind a film legacy that would inspire future generations of filmmakers.
