Doris Blackburn

Doris Blackburn was born on September 18, 1889. She was born in Hawthorn, a place in Victoria, Australia. Her family cared a lot about school and fairness. Her father, Richard Alfred Hordern, was a businessman. He taught Doris that everyone should be treated fairly.

Doris went to a school called Presbyterian Ladies' College in Melbourne. There, she learned to be a leader. She also learned to notice when people were being treated unfairly.

At first, Doris worked as a teacher. But soon she wanted to do more. She began helping women and children have better lives. She joined a group called the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. This group worked for peace and for fixing problems in society. Doris believed fighting was not the answer. She believed in working together instead.

In 1946, something big happened. Doris was elected to the Australian House of Representatives. This is a very important group that helps make laws for the whole country. She won a seat called Bourke. At that time, almost no women were in this part of government. Doris was the very first woman from Victoria to do this job!

Doris worked hard once she was in parliament. She wanted better schools for kids. She also fought for the rights of Aboriginal people. She wanted men and women to be treated the same way. This was not easy. Most of the other people in parliament were men. Many of them did not agree with her. But Doris kept trying anyway.

Doris never won a special award for her work while she was alive. But she did something no woman from Victoria had ever done before. She helped open doors for other women who wanted to work in government too.

Doris was married to a man named Maurice Blackburn. He was also involved in politics, working with a group called the Labour Party. Doris and Maurice both believed in fairness and helping others. They supported each other in their work.

After Doris finished her time in parliament, she did not stop helping people. She kept working for causes she cared about. Doris passed away on December 12, 1970.

Doris Blackburn is remembered as a very important person in Australian history. She helped make it easier for other women to join politics after her. She also helped people talk more about fairness and people's rights. Doris showed that one person who works hard and believes in fairness can make a real difference in the world.
