Dixy Lee Ray

Dixy Lee Ray was born on September 3, 1914. She was born in Tacoma, Washington. She grew up on a small farm south of the city. She was the second of five sisters. Even as a young girl, Dixy loved to learn. She was very curious about the world around her. She loved science most of all. She especially liked learning about plants, animals, and nature.

Dixy finished school in Tacoma. Then she went to college at Mills College in California. She studied zoology there. Zoology is the study of animals. She graduated in 1937. After that, she wanted to learn even more. She went to Stanford University. She studied hard and earned her PhD in 1945. A PhD is one of the highest degrees a person can earn. She loved studying life in the ocean.

After finishing school, Dixy became a teacher. She taught at the University of Washington. She taught about marine biology. That means she studied plants and animals that live in the ocean. She became known as a great teacher and scientist. Many people admired her work.

In the 1960s, Dixy did something amazing. She helped create the Pacific Science Center in Seattle. This is a special place where people can learn about science. Kids and adults still visit it today. Dixy helped direct this center. She wanted everyone to enjoy learning about science, just like she did.

Dixy became very famous in 1973. President Richard Nixon picked her for an important job. She became the leader of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. This group studied nuclear energy. Nuclear energy is a powerful kind of energy. Dixy was the very first woman to lead this group. She believed nuclear energy could help people. Some people disagreed with her. This led to many big discussions about energy in the whole country.

Dixy worked hard her whole life. She never got married. She spent her time focused on science and helping the public.

In 1976, Dixy did something no woman had ever done before. She was elected governor of Washington State. She was the first woman to hold this job in her state. As governor, she made many big decisions. She still believed nuclear energy was good. She also made choices about protecting nature. Not everyone agreed with her ideas. People still talk about her time as governor today.

Dixy served one term as governor. After that, she left politics. But she did not stop talking about important issues. She kept sharing her ideas with people. Dixy passed away on January 2, 1994.
