1. What did Catia Bastioli study in school?
2. What is special about the bioplastics Bastioli helped create?
3. What award did Bastioli and her team win in 2007?
4. Besides Novamont, what other company did Bastioli lead as president?
Catia Bastioli was born in Foligno, Italy, on October 3, 1957. She loved chemistry and nature when she was young. She studied chemistry at the University of Perugia. She finished her studies in 1981 with great grades. Later, she also studied business at Bocconi University in Milan. Learning both science and business helped her a lot later in her life.
In the 1980s, Bastioli got interested in something new. She wanted to make plastic from plants instead of oil. At that time, almost all plastic came from oil. Not many people were thinking about plants yet. Bastioli was one of the first.
She started working at a company called Montedison. Then she helped start a research group called the Fertec Research Center. This group studied how to make materials from renewable things, like plants. In 1991, this group joined a company called Novamont.
Bastioli joined Novamont in 1991 too. She started as a technical director. She worked hard and moved up. By 1993, she became the general manager. By 1996, she became the managing director. Later, she became the CEO, which means she was the top boss. Under her leadership, Novamont became famous for making bioplastics. These are plastics that can break down naturally instead of staying in the environment forever.
Bastioli invented many things. She earned many patents, which are special papers that protect new inventions. In 1995, she filed a patent for a foam plastic that could break down naturally. It was approved in 1998. She kept inventing new plastics for many years. Some patents were about making stronger, better bioplastic films. Others were about turning plant sugars into useful chemicals. These inventions helped make bioplastics stronger and more useful, so they could be used in real products like bags and farm tools.
In 2007, Bastioli and her team won a big award called European Inventor of the Year. This award comes from the European Patent Office and the European Commission. It celebrated her work on plastics made from plants. This was very special because it showed that eco-friendly plastics could really work in the real world. It was also special because not many women led big science teams like hers.
Bastioli also received other honors. She got honorary degrees in chemistry, engineering, and business. In 2025, she won the Maria Bakunin Medal from the Italian Chemical Society. This award celebrated her work on sustainable materials.
Bastioli did more than invent things. She also helped guide big decisions about the environment. She worked with European groups that talked about renewable resources and climate change. She was president of the Kyoto Club, a group focused on climate change. She was also part of a foundation called Fondazione Cariplo. From 2014 to 2020, she was president of Terna, a company that manages Italy's electric power grid.
We do not know much about Bastioli's family life. She has kept her personal life private. Most of what we know about her is about her science and work.
Catia Bastioli's story is important. She helped show the world that plastic could be made in a better way, using plants instead of oil. She helped prove that being kind to the environment and being successful in business could go together. She is also important because she is a woman who led in a field where mostly men worked. Her inventions and leadership helped change how people think about plastic and the environment.
