Carolyn Haywood

Carolyn Haywood was born on January 3, 1898, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her father was named Samuel Hall Haywood. Her mother was named Caroline Haywood. Carolyn's parents wanted her to read a lot when she was little. She grew up loving books and stories. She was also very good at drawing.

Carolyn went to a school called the Philadelphia High School for Girls. Later, she went to a special art school called the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. There, she learned from great artists, including a man named Frank Schoonover. This schooling helped her get ready for her future job of writing and drawing books for kids.

At first, Carolyn drew pictures for magazines. This was her first job. But she loved telling stories so much that she decided to write her own books. In 1939, she wrote her very first children's book. It was called "B Is for Betsy." This book was the start of her amazing career as a writer.

The book did so well that Carolyn wrote many more books about the same girl, Betsy. These books told fun stories about Betsy's life at school. Kids all over America loved reading about Betsy. This made Carolyn famous as a wonderful storyteller.

Over her lifetime, Carolyn wrote and drew more than forty books! She made both the words and the pictures for her stories. One of her most popular series was about a boy named Eddie. These books were funny and told about Eddie's silly adventures. Kids and parents both loved her books because they were warm, kind, and had beautiful pictures.

Carolyn's books were so special that she won awards for them. One important award she won was the Children's Book Award. This award came from a group called the Child Study Association of America. It showed how much people appreciated her stories.

Carolyn lived most of her life in Philadelphia. She liked to keep her personal life private. She spent most of her time writing and drawing. This quiet time helped her think of new ideas for her books. She never got married, and not much is known about her personal relationships.

Carolyn's books are still important today. She was really good at writing about everyday things that happen to kids, like going to school or playing with friends.
