Becky Hammon was born on March 11, 1977, in Rapid City, South Dakota. Her full name is Rebecca Lynn Hammon. She grew up ready to work hard. She learned to compete against players who were bigger and more famous than her. This never stopped her.
Becky went to Stevens High School in Rapid City. She was already a great basketball player. Then she went to Colorado State University. There, she became one of the best players the school ever had. She was named an All-American three different times. She scored more points than any other player in the school's history. In 1998, she was named the best player in her conference. She helped her team make it further in the national tournament than ever before.
Even with all this success, no WNBA team picked Becky in the 1999 draft. That was hard. But soon after, the New York Liberty signed her anyway. She worked hard and became one of the best point guards in the whole league. She was picked for six All-Star games during her career.
Becky also played basketball in other countries during the WNBA off-season. Many great players did this back then. Becky even became a citizen of Russia and played for their national team. In 2008, she won a bronze medal at the Olympics in Beijing. That was a huge achievement.
Over 16 years in the WNBA, Becky became one of the most respected players ever. In 2007, she led the whole league in assists, which means passes that helped teammates score. She played for the New York Liberty and later for the San Antonio team. She was so good that her jersey number, 25, was retired by San Antonio. That means no other player on that team can ever wear that number again. It is a special honor.
After she stopped playing, Becky did something amazing. In 2014, she joined the San Antonio Spurs, an NBA team, as a coach. She became the first woman ever to be a full-time assistant coach in the NBA. She was the first woman to have this kind of job in any major men's sports league in North America. This was a huge moment in sports history.
Becky kept breaking records. In 2016, she became the first woman to coach in the NBA All-Star Game. In 2020, something even bigger happened. During a real game, the head coach got kicked out. Becky took over as head coach for the rest of the game. She was the first woman to ever do this in NBA history.
In 2021, Becky left the Spurs to become head coach of the Las Vegas Aces, a WNBA team. In her very first year as head coach, she led the Aces to win the whole championship in 2022! No other first-year coach had ever done that before. She was named Coach of the Year too.
On August 12, 2023, Becky was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. This is one of the highest honors in basketball. It celebrated her amazing career as both a player and a coach.
