Ada Cambridge

Ada Cambridge was born on November 21, 1844. She was born in a place called St. Germans, in Norfolk, England. Her father was Henry Cambridge. He was a farmer. Her mother was Thomasina Cambridge.

Ada did not go to a regular school. She learned at home. Her family let her read lots of books. She loved writing too. This early love of books helped her become a writer later in life.

When Ada was 26 years old, she married a man named George Frederick Cross. He was a curate, which is a kind of church helper. Soon after they got married, Ada and George moved far away to Australia. This big move changed Ada's life. Later, she used her new experiences in Australia to write stories.

Ada started writing early. She wrote poems and short pieces for magazines. In Australia, she was busy helping her husband with his church work. But she still found time to write. She met many people in small country towns. These experiences gave her good ideas for her stories.

In 1875, Ada published her first book. It was a book of poems called The Manor House and Other Poems. But Ada became most famous for her novels, which are long story books. Her first novel was called Up the Murray. It came out in parts in 1875. Her first really popular novel was A Marked Man, published in 1890.

Over her life, Ada wrote almost 25 novels! Two of her famous books are The Three Miss Kings from 1891 and The Perversity of Human Nature from 1912. Many of her stories were about brave women. These women characters did not always follow the rules of their time. Ada's stories often talked about marriage, women's rights, and life in Australia's colonies.

Ada did not win any big writing prizes while she was alive. But people who knew her respected her a lot. Today, people say she was one of the first important women writers from Australia.

Ada's life was not always easy. She had three children. Sadly, one of her babies died when it was very young. Even with this sadness, Ada kept writing. Her husband always supported her writing work.

Ada's books are important because they show what life was like for women a long time ago in Australia. She wrote about strong women who wanted more freedom. Her stories helped later women writers in Australia feel brave enough to write too.

People still read and study Ada's books today. They learn about how women lived back then. They also learn about life in Australia when it was still a colony. Ada is remembered as a great writer. She is also remembered as someone who made people think differently about the world around them.

Ada kept writing even when she got older. But she did step back a little from public life. Ada Cambridge passed away on July 19, 1926. She died in Melbourne, Australia. She left behind many wonderful books for people to enjoy.
